Flip Book

Make a hand-drawn flip book that tells a story. Then film yourself flipping through it with a song. Your video gets published on The Hoot.

Blank flip book pads, 4.5 by 2.5 inches
Your flip book pad: 90 sheets, 4.5″ x 2.5″

Requirements

  • Use the flip book pad provided in class
  • All 90 pages (the front of every sheet)
  • Tells a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end
  • Has a theme: one big idea your story shows, like friendship, change, or never giving up
  • Words, art, or both
  • Color on every page
  • Use of space: art fills at least half of every page and stays out of the binding edge
  • Each page builds on the one before it so the story reads smoothly when flipped

Use of Space

binding
  • Binding edge: leave it blank. Anything drawn here gets hidden when you flip.
  • Flip zone: keep your main action on the side away from the binding. That’s the part your thumb shows best.
  • Go big: your art should fill at least half of every page.

Steps

  1. Pitch: Write 2 to 3 sentences about your story and 1 sentence naming your theme. Sketch the first, middle, and last frames.
  2. Plan: Fill out the Flip Book Story Planner. Map your story across the pad (beginning on pages 1 to 30, middle on 31 to 60, end on 61 to 90) and sketch your key frames.
  3. Draft: Pencil every page and test-flip. Fix any jumps.
  4. Final: Ink and color every page. Erase stray pencil lines.
  5. Video: Record yourself flipping through the full book with a song playing. Keep the book in frame and in focus the whole time.
  6. Submit: Turn in your flip book and upload your video to Canvas.

Schedule

DateGoal
Tue 10/27Finish the Story Planner and start your flip book
Thu 10/29Work day: finish pages 1 to 45
Tue 11/3Work day: finish all 90 pages
Tue 11/10Record your video and submit. Due today.

Extension

Finished early? Flip the pad over and make a second flip book on the back sides of all 90 sheets. It can continue your story, tell it from another character’s view, or be a brand new story. Film it with its own song.
