What Happens When You Die? by Izabel Kump

That’s a huge question that many people have. Everyone has their own opinions and beliefs about life after death. Your body’s vital function stops. Your heart no longer beats. Your breath stops and your brain no longer functions. Some people say you get a seven minute recap of your whole life when you stop breathing. Your brain is still actively functioning for seven minutes once you stop breathing. The thing about death is you can think of it however you want. You can decide if you believe heavens a thing or if it’s all make believe and nothing is there after. The most we know about heaven is that it’s a place where your soul and spirit live forever. We also know that when you get to heaven you’re reunited with all your loved ones that have passed. Some people believe that there is something about you that survives the death of your body. It leaves another body to go live in.

Physical signs of death:

  • blotchy skin mainly on your hands, feet, and knees
  • your blood pressure decreases
  • you can’t swallow
  • you lose control of your bladder
  • you get tired
  • your lungs get congested and clogged
  • you have a hard time breathing
  • your eyes water
  • your hands get cold
  • weak pulse
  • you hallucinate
  • your muscles relax
  • your temperature drops
  • your blood gets pulled down
  • your body stiffens
  • the heart is the last organ to die

Thanatophobia is an intense fear of death or the dying process. It’s an anxiety disorder that disrupts many people’s lives. It’s called “death anxiety”. It’s when you’re anxious about your own death or the death of a loved one. Thanatophobia gets mixed up with necrophobia. Necrophobia is fear of corpses or places that contain dead things such as graveyards. Thanatophobia is very common but it can affect people’s everyday lives. It affects the way you think about specific things or focus on easy everyday tasks. Between 3% – 10% of people think about death on a daily basis.

Death is so unexpected. The fears of the unknown, nonexistence, eternal punishment, the loss of control, or the fear of what happens to your loved ones when you’re gone. Is it painful or peaceful? Everyone has their own thoughts about it. Everyone thinks about it at least a few times in their lifetime. I think when you die you’re free. No one has a hold on you; you’re just free from pain.
