Annie’s Film Reviews: The Wild Robot (2024)

PG 102 minutes 8.5/10

“The Wild Robot”, based on the YA novel series by Peter Brown, takes place in a post-apocalyptic society where humans have created robots to help with any imaginable task. After being shipwrecked on a deserted island, ROZZUM-7134 (Roz) must fulfill her purpose of service or return to the factory. After adapting to her surroundings, including deciphering the language of the forest critters, Roz develops a parental bond with an orphaned gosling. Her new task is to raise it enough that it can migrate south before winter arrives. With the help of a tricky fox named Fink, and a mother opossum named Pinktail, Roz has to defy her code to fulfill her task. This film is riddled with themes of found family and self-discovery. Perfect for the whole family (chosen or otherwise).

Being unfamiliar with the book series this film is based on, this movie stands on its own really well. The animation style was organic and fresh, and created stunning visuals throughout the film. The film balances humor and emotion, offering moments of laughter and tears. The voice cast features renowned actors such as Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Matt Berry, Bill Nighy, Kit Connor, and Mark Hamill. I would recommend this movie to anybody with small kids in their family, anybody who has a found family, and anybody who is going through a journey of self discovery and acceptance.
