[FROM THE ARCHIVE] Poet Laureate Vists Valley by Sarah Curtis

Imagine Valley High School’s small gymnasium packed with well more than 250 people. That was the case on April 21st, when David Lee, Utah resident, poet, and Utah’s first ever Poet Laureate, graced Valley HIgh School with his presence.

This was the first time reading at Valley High, nad hopefully not his last. From the moment he entered the over-crowded gym, to the moment he left, everyone’s eyes and attention belonged to him. The audience sat in awe while he read from a few of his great classics. Lee’s poems and prose are filled with emotion, hilarity, and above all, compassionate wisdom. He has captivated audiences for years, and Valley High was no exception. He has an ear for familiar and informal conversation, pays close attention to concrete detail, and has first hand knowledge of farm life, which sets his writing apart from other writers, making him unique in his generation. He gave a brilliant performance portraying each of his authentic characters beautifully.

On behalf of Valley High School, we would like to thank you, David Lee, for your eloquent works, and for touching the lives of all of us. We stand welcoming you back with open arms.

We should all hope for David Lee to return again. He is truly one of the few living legens.

Over the past two decades, David Lee has written numerous classics, everyone should definantly check them out. This is a list of his works: My Town, Day’s Work, The Porcine Canticles, Driving and Drinking.
