The poetry slam returned last quarter, and though it has always been interesting in the past, this quarter it was a spectacle to behold. With the many performances that came up, there was a wide diversity in the tones, spirits, and voices on stage, providing an interesting blend of tragedy and comedy.

With so much ground to cover, I’ve been left to pick only a few; rest assured, each work was fantastic in its own right. One of the more refined performances, Julian performed John Cage’s 4’33”. His esoteric choice left the audience speechless, with any vocalizations sung with the voice of an angel that would move the souls of his spectators nearly to tears. The silence spoke measures beyond human comprehension, leaving us to contemplate the meanings of our minuscule existences. Rarely do we find such talent among our peers, and rarely can we witness such silent perfection.

On a less sarcastic note, Corrine sang something more culturally rooted: Elvis’ “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” It came as a significant shock to hear someone sing. Though poetry has many mediums, few have the talent to perform it in song. And few would be as well-suited to do so; Corrine’s voice radiated through the auditorium and warmed our hearts and ears.

Jordan dealt a severe blow to our heartstrings, with a potent piece on tragic loss. I daresay this was one of the highest points of this slam, and words can’t describe the experience she delivered. It takes courage to come up on stage and speak of something so personal. But pain kindles beauty, and I’m glad Jordan could share it with us.

Lanny Sorenson, one of Valley’s many beloved teachers, managed to blow us away with a work like few others. Lanny doesn’t usually project such profoundness, yet he ushered in something powerful with eloquent phrasing. It truly felt like a genius in motion, and I’d be fascinated to hear more of his writing in the future.

Of the poetry slams before, this one will likely linger in our memories for quite a while, at least until the next to come. It showcases the talent and creativity of our students here at Valley, something oft undervalued at other schools. It was a momentous occasion, and I feel sorry for anyone who missed this wonderful event. For your own sake, make sure not to miss the next one.
