The liberator staff sponsored a poetry slam for the students of Valley High School on December 15th in the Owl’s Nest. It was a celebration of great writing. A poetry slam is a plave for the writer to get up in front of an audience. In addition there was a fundraiser for the Children’s Justice Center, a place for abused kids to find safety and shelter.
There was a lot more than just poem reading going on at the poetry slam. There was a prize drawing for people who donated to the fundraiser and those who read. Among the seventeen winders were Justin Fry, Daniella Talbot, Taylor Orten, and Eddie Sanchez. They received sweatshirts, candy, yearbooks, and Off the Wall magazines.
There were many inspiring poems covering topics that were serious, emotional, dramatic, funny, and even childhood dreams Thirteen brave students and three teachers dared to get up and share their work with an audience of over 100 people. There were even some who got up and read the poems other people wrote. The courageous readers were Angela Coon, Sara Edge, Eddie Sanchez, Megan Robinette, Stephanie Murri, Nohelani Tuilefano, Elyse Whitaker, Samanath Johnson, faulty members Don Link and Lisa Kolstad read original work, and Terry Jensen started things off with an amusing Christmas story.
Two people, Callie Christensen and Danielle Bigelow, really made this even happen, we thank them for their dedication and support. Look for the next Slammin’ even this Spring, and don’t forget to submit your great writing and art to Off the Wal, Valley High School’s literary magazine.
