Valley Goes to Antelope Island

This field trip to Antelope Island was an experience. We were asked to write about the different things we saw, like the little sea life and certain plants, and to describe what they are and what they felt like.

The first thing we discovered was a shrimp living close to shore. We all had to have a partner to capture at least one in a jar. The land was very beachy and flat, but the water was so low it only went up to your shins, making it easy to reach the shrimp. This allowed everyone to get what they needed, but it made drying off hard because of how much sand would stick to your feet. If you didn’t have something to dry off, you were out of luck.

It was hot, which made it a bit annoying, but the wind helped us cool down as we headed back up the hill to get on the bus. Before boarding the bus, we wrote down what we were standing on, which, believe it or not, wasn’t sand but fish poop. There was a lot of it! We also had to write about some plants, describe what they felt like, and guess what they might be used for. This made the field trip feel a little long, but once we reached the top of the hill, we could wash our feet off. Most of us used shirts or paper towels to dry off, but we all made it back onto the bus safely and headed to our next adventure: going up a mountain.

On our way up the mountain, it was a small hike to the top. My girlfriend and I tried to take a shortcut and got into a little trouble, so we had to follow the teachers up the trail. Once at the top, we observed a moment of silence to respect the land and then shared one good thing or affirmation about the day. We admired the view, took pictures, and then walked back down the hill to our buses.
