Steps to Earn Elective Credit through Submissions
The Hoot is the evolution of two historical Valley mainstays: the newspaper (The Liberator) and the literary magazine (Off the Wall). As such, our goal is to continually use history as a guide for our publication. As a publication, we publish student writing, art, video, and other content submitted to us from current Valley students.
You can view previous submissions and work from the class to use as examples via our website: hoothoot.org.
Students can earn additional elective credits through submissions of their class.
- Students will need to submit and have published three different pieces throughout one calendar school year (Aug-May). Submissions will no longer be accepted when there is one week remaining of Q4.
- If a student is currently enrolled in in the Digital Publishing class (the class responsible for publication), they will need to have published submissions that are completed outside of class time. Submissions from class that have been graded or assigned will not count towards the elective credit option.
- Book reviews cannot be used to earn credit for book club and The Hoot. Credit will be given to unique, individual submissions.
Does every submission get published to the site?
- Not every submission we receive will end up on the site. The Digital Publication class has worked hard to define what we do publish. Submissions that are not published will be notified.
- If a student wishes to revise their work to be fit for publication through the website, they are welcome to work with Rachel or Graham to meet those requirements.
Media Release
- Because the internet is public and forever, each student who wishes for their work to be on The Hoot needs to have signed the media release given to students when they registered. This will be verified by Rachel or Graham prior to publication.
