Alexis Johnson
Interview (Manager)
Alexis Johnson serves as the dynamic manager and host for Valley High School’s Voice of Valley podcast. With graduation slated for June 2024, Alexis’s academic pursuits in painting, humanities, and language arts infuse her work with a rich palette of insights. Intent on a career in aesthetics nursing, Alexis will first earn her RN license at SLCC. She brings a history of creative expression, evidenced by a music video project, to the table. Her skillset—including strategic vision, creative problem-solving, and analytical acumen—positions her as a multifaceted contributor to the podcast. Beyond academia, Alexis’s interests range from makeup and modeling to fitness and live music. Her ambition for the podcast? To be a conduit for sharing diverse experiences and deepening societal understanding.

Brielle Jones

Brielle Jones, a senior at our high school, is a creative force within “The Hoot.” Her talents in art, especially ceramics, shine through in the visual aspects of the publication. Brielle’s unique, edgy writing adds a fictional twist to our pages. She contributes illustrations, ideas, and humor-filled videos that are sure to bring smiles. Beyond the publication, Brielle’s interests are as varied as playing lacrosse, painting, and learning about moths, the earth, and cars. Looking ahead, she aims to make people laugh while pursuing a career in law enforcement.

Shae Swensen

Shae Swensen, a senior at our high school, is a dedicated member of “The Hoot” literary publication. Passionate about writing essays on serious topics, Shae’s work often reflects their deep interest in music, drawing inspiration from rap, R&B, and classic tunes. Outside of writing, Shae delves into tarot, spirituality, and mental health, which add a rich layer of depth to their contributions. As a positive force within the publication, Shae aspires to share their knowledge and experiences with the school community, fostering an environment of self-improvement and open communication. Their future goals include continuing to be a positive member and leveraging their learnings for the betterment of the publication and their peers.

Shayla Chapman

Shayla Chapman is a early grad junior as well as a member of Valley High Schools Literary Publication. Shayla is an extremely social person with a super outgoing personality. She enjoys connecting with other Valley students and teachers. Outside of school, Shayla enjoys snowboarding with friends and sleeping. After high school Shayla is planning on attending Taylor Andrews Academy to pursue a career in esthetics.

Marcus Boehme

Marcus Boehme is the manager and a part of the Non-Fiction Writing Group from Valley High School’s Online Literary Publication. In school he is a huge fan of conversing with his peers and teachers, researching new topics, writing and painting. He has written many different things, but never for a school newspaper or for publication. Marcus loves to talk with his peers and come to constructive conclusions to craft an excellent piece of writing. There are so many different topics and views on so many different things, and Marcus loves to touch bases on each view before beginning writing.

Grace Kasanos

Grace Kasanos, a senior at Valley High and the creative writing manager of ‘The Hoot,’ blends her passion for poetic and open-ended writing with her enjoyment of realist fiction and the poignant lyrics of artists like Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, and Mac Miller. As manager, she oversees timely submissions and curates content, contributing significantly to the publication’s success. An active participant in Salt Lake City’s concert scene and a supporter of local businesses, Grace’s aspiration to become an English teacher is fueled by her experiences, which she believes will lead to engaging and dynamic lesson plans for future 7-12th grade students.

Everett, a senior at our high school, is an integral part of “The Hoot” staff. His unique perspective and supportive roles are essential to the literary magazine’s success. With an interest in mechanics, Everett applies his problem-solving skills to various tasks within the publication. His contributions, though he’s still defining his future goals, are invaluable to “The Hoot.”

Elijah

Elijah, a senior at our high school, brings a unique perspective to The Hoot. With a keen interest in literary philosophy, Elijah values literature that fosters personal growth and self-improvement. Outside the publication, Elijah is passionate about vehicle mechanics, enjoying the intricacies of how things work. He loves spending time with friends, engaging in deep conversations, and capturing the beauty of the world through photography and drawing, especially in the serene setting of the canyon. As Elijah looks towards the future, he aspires to apply the critical thinking skills honed through his literary experiences to his career goal of becoming a skilled mechanic at Kenworth after earning his degree.

Tanner Gross

Tanner Gross a new addition to our literary publication, Tanner Gross carries with him a vibrant curiosity and a zest for discovery. His interests range from the intricacies of automotive technology to the immersive worlds of gaming and the diverse sounds of new music artists. Though Tanner is just beginning his journey with The Hoot, his eagerness to share compelling narratives and uncover interesting facts promises a fresh and engaging contribution to our community. With aspirations to graduate and further his education in college, Tanner is poised to bring his unique perspectives to both The Hoot and his future endeavors.

Brooklynn Montoya
Brooklynn Montoya, a senior at Valley High, serves as the tech editor for ‘The Hoot.’ Passionate about English, she discovered a love for Brontë’s writing in eighth grade. Avid in her literary pursuits, Brooklynn enjoys journaling and was inspired by Charlotte Brontë’s work. Her innovative spirit is evident in her contributions, notably the student-recommended playlist, which aligns with her love for music and daily life rhythm. Brooklynn aspires to sustain the playlist’s legacy and aims to study criminal psychology, understanding the minds of serial killers, a path she’s eager to embark on at college.

MJ Ortega
MJ Ortega, a dedicated senior, is the Visual Arts Manager for ‘The Hoot,’ overseeing the curation and presentation of student artwork. Passionate about art, MJ not only contributes her own artwork, but also leads the marketing efforts to increase submissions from other students and displays them on ‘The Hoot.’ MJ enjoys drawing, roller-skating, and exploring the creative art of makeup.

Kenley
Kenley, an 11th grader at our high school, brings her social savvy to the literary publication as an interviewer and video editor. With a knack for connecting with people, she excels in creating personal and engaging content. Kenley’s academic strengths in editing complement her role, ensuring each piece is polished to perfection. Apart from her contributions to “The Hoot,” Kenley is ambitious, eyeing an early high school graduation and a future in cosmetology. Her unique perspective and dedication are invaluable to the publication’s success.

Caleb Marvive
Caleb Marvive, a dedicated senior at VHS, serves as the tech manager for ‘The Hoot,’ where he channels his passion for English into the technological realm, particularly through his ambitious project to develop the publication’s website. He finds inspiration in dystopian, nonfiction, and fiction works, which influence his innovative approach to web design. In his role, Caleb is committed to ensuring that student voices are heard and appreciated online. With graduation on the horizon, he eagerly anticipates traversing the United States to embrace new experiences and forge meaningful connections, all while sharing the diverse stories he encounters.

Jose Reyna
Jose Reyna is a senior at our high school and a fervent new member of The Hoot’s non-fiction team. With academic interests deeply rooted in U.S. history, politics, geography, economics, and philosophy, Jose’s approach to writing is both informative and argumentative. He aspires to bring his passion for political activism and his experiences into his writing, aiming to address the issues that matter most to him. Outside of school, Jose is a dedicated listener of political podcasts and history documentaries, further enriching his understanding of the world. His long-term goals include pursuing a bachelor’s and possibly a master’s degree, with the ambition of becoming a teacher or a paralegal. As he embarks on his journey with The Hoot, Jose is eager to tie his vast interests into impactful work that resonates with the readers.
