Lover of a Ghost is Violent Vira’s debut album, which came out in 2025. It’s centered on a fictional storyline of grief, abandonment, and obsession. It follows a protagonist dealing with a missing, presumably dead lover. It explores themes of insanity, religious trauma, and hallucinations, all while the protagonist is trying to search for her lover. I’d say the song that best represents these themes is “You Promised” Where the lyrics describe how the protagonist’s lover promised they’d be together forever, but then vanished. Lyrics like “You promised to marry me, they’re all lying saying you don’t love me,” and “Not even death could do us part.” Highlights these themes of abandonment and grief. The genre of Lover of a Ghost, and Violent Vira’s music in general, is alternative rock/metal, with some songs having screamo elements.
I think the themes of the album are relevant today because grief is something many people go through, including Violent Vira herself. Even though the album’s story is fictional, it’s based on her own personal experiences, and it’s a realistic depiction of what it’s like to lose a loved one. I can’t personally relate to most of the themes, but I still think it’s a really interesting story with symbolism and lore. But the sound of the music is what really leaves me breathless.
The music is loud, sometimes chaotic, with instruments like electric guitar, and with strong drum beats. But I’d say the vocals are my favorite part. The vocals are sharp, with occasional screams that really highlight the pain shown in the lyrics. It mostly stays within the genre, except for 2 of the songs in the album. Intro, which is the first song in the album, briefly introduces the themes of the story. In the song, a woman is speaking to a child, and the child tells her there’s a ghost inside her, and when she dies, the ghost normally goes to heaven. The woman asks if she’s going to heaven, and the child says no, and that she’s not going anywhere.
The other song that differs from the rest is in the middle of the album, and it’s called Interlude. It’s an instrumental track that acts as an intermission that goes to the second half of songs afterwards. In this album, there is literally a main character of the album, whose story we follow through each song. The lyrics are telling the story through the vocals. Although the character isn’t necessarily Vira herself, she does play the role of the protagonist who is narrating. The main character of this album is every lyric sung that adds more to the story. ( I don’t know if that makes sense… )
Lover of a Ghost seems like a step forward for Vira, but also a new direction. To me, it feels like a new chapter in a story. Or maybe, a story retold in a new and deeper way. Vira’s older songs have had a similar sound and themes, but weren’t necessarily a story told song by song, like Lover of a Ghost. Vira’s older music was personal ideas and experiences being expressed in a dark, alternative, and compelling way. The debut album is like a clearer story being told. The protagonist sings about a dead lover, which Vira has sung about in the past as well. But this time, it’s in a chronological story with many new and also old themes explored. The music videos especially help listeners understand the events in the story. I want people to discover the dark but also beautiful songs in this album, but Violent Vira is sadly pretty underrated. I’m hoping this album ( and other albums to come ) really help people discover Violent Vira.
